The Regional Governor of Attica, Ms Rena Dourou met the Deputy Minister of Interior in charge of immigration policy, Mr Domenico Manzione on 20/4/16 in Rome, in her contacts to highlight the role of the regions in addressing the refugee/migrant crisis.
After expressing her condolences for the new refugee boat disaster off Sicily, Ms Rena Dourou presented the actions that have been delivered by the Region of Attica on the refugee/migrant crisis. The Regional Governor of Attica underlined that today both Italy and Greece “are witnessing the consequences of a lack of a consistent EU policy on the refugee/migrant crisis, as was indeed the case for the financial crisis”. “However, the current debt crisis should not serve as an excuse for inaction on the matter", continued Rena Dourou, while she stressed the need for a comprehensive European response and the contribution of the regional and local authorities to the matter. Otherwise, the credibility of the EU institutions, “delivering too little, too late”, may be inevitably harmed. “The EU’s prestige has decreased considerably in the eyes of young people”, emphasised the Regional Governor of Attica.
The Deputy Minister of Interior in charge of immigration policy, Mr Domenico Manzione stressed the high degree of accord on the issue, stating that a common European policy on the migration/refugee crisis remains a challenge. He also referred, inter alia, to the need to create the conditions for a ‘diffuse — widespread acceptance of migrants”. Finally, the Regional Governor of Attica, Ms Rena Dourou and the Deputy Minister of Interior in charge of immigration policy, Mr Domenico Manzione agreed on a Roadmap of specific actions to be taken in the nearest future.

Earlier, the Regional Governor of Attica met and held discussions with her counterparts, the Governor of Lazio Region, Mr Nicola Zingaretti, and the Deputy Governor, Mr Massimiliano Smeriglio. In particular, they discussed the possibilities of creating a common front to tackle the refugee/migrant flows. In this context, the Regional Governor of Attica presented an initiative to send a joint letter to the EU institutions regarding the absorption of the existing European financial instruments by the LRAs, and the issue of unaccompanied minors. The Governor of Lazio Region welcomed this initiative as well as the strengthening of interregional cooperation on the matter.
“The refugee/migrant crisis is a crucial challenge to the fundamental principles of EU — if we succeed in reversing the current trend, we will achieve the deepening of democracy within the European institutions”, stated the Regional Governor of Attica.
