Joint letter from the Regions of Attica, Sicily and Lazio to the EU institutions with regard to the strengthening of the Regions’ role in addressing the migrant/refugee crisis
‘Europe’s regions can be part of a common European integrated solution to the refugee crisis’, stress, inter alia, Rena Dourou, Governor of Attica Region, Rosario Crocetta, Presidente Regione Sicilia and Nicola Zingaretti, President Regione Lazio in their joint letter to the EU institutions.
This joint letter, addressed to the European Council, the European Commission and the European Parliament, highlights the role of the LRAs in the migrant/refugee crisis, whilst it stresses the need for the EU to strengthen the role of the EU’s Local and Regional authorities in addressing the issue.
In particular, following an initiative by the Regional Governor of Attica, Ms Rena Dourou in her recent contacts in Rome with her Italian counterparts, i.e. Rosario Crocetta, Presidente Regione Sicilia and Nicola Zingaretti, President Regione Lazio, an attempt is being made to lay the foundations for Europe’s Local and Regional Authorities, especially those which are on the frontline in tackling the refugee crisis, to acquire the appropriate means/tools, in order for these Regions to effectively fulfil their role in the context of a common European migration policy.
‘Our Regions will continue rescuing, receiving and caring for tormented people, as they have been doing until now, showing great determination in addressing this unprecedented situation despite having inadequate means.
However, this fight cannot be fought by our Regions alone. For this is a fight encompassing not a single region, country, or institution. It encompasses the fundamental EU ideals and the future of the common European project which today is impaired, especially in the eyes of young people’, stressed Rena Dourou, Governor of Attica Region, Rosario Crocetta, Presidente Regione Sicilia and Nicola Zingaretti, President Regione Lazio in their joint letter to the EU institutions.
In their letter the three leaders call upon the EU institutions to create the conditions needed by the LRAs to ensure effective action. A series of concrete actions has been proposed to this end.
