In the context of the speech delivered by the Chair of the Current Affairs Committee of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in the Hellenic Parliament
"I think that the presence of the Chair of the Congress Current Affairs Committee should mark a new chapter in the field of action of the Hellenic Parliament’s Special Permanent Committee on Regions," stressed the Regional Governor of Attica, Rena Dourou, during her speech today at the special meeting of the Hellenic Parliament’s Special Permanent Committee on Regions, in the context of the speech delivered by the Chair of the Congress Current Affairs Committee, Gabriele Neff.The Regional Governor seized the opportunity to demand again the change of the legal framework in order to provide legal protection for local communities, Mayors and Regional Governors who are in the front line trying to address the refugee / migration crisis.Then, after the Chair, Gabriele Neff, had met with the First Deputy Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, T. Kourakis, the Regional Governor, a member of the Congress herself, signed the pact "One in Five," which is the contribution of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities to the Council of Europe’s campaign to stop sexual violence against children.The Pact was also signed by the Mayor of Nikea- Ag. Ioannis Renti, G. Ioakimidis, also a member of the Congress.The Pact can be signed by all the Regions and Municipalities of the member countries of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.
Earlier, the Governor of Attica, in her welcome address before the Hellenic Parliament’s Special Permanent Committee on Regions, had stressed that"by signing the Pact with the support of the Parliament we aim to commit ourselves to taking action and use this Pact as a double starting point."
"First, it will serve as a starting point for initiatives taken by other Regions and Municipalities in order to raise the awareness of local communities and plan strategies to protect childhood against the phenomenon of sexual violence. Secondly, it will be a starting point for cooperation between the Congress and the Special Permanent Committee on Regions.A cooperation that can be fruitful by endorsing proposals and initiatives,” the Regional Governor stressed.
"The signing of this Pact can help the Parliament’s Committee to function as a bridge of information, exchange of views and, ultimately, joint initiatives between the Congress and the Hellenic Parliament with the aim of deepening local democracy, in the light of a modern decentralized growth model which is based on social cohesion and solidarity," she noted.
The Chair of the Current Affairs Committee of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, Gabriele Neff, accompanied byRenateZikmund,Head of the Directorate for Legislative Work of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, visited Athens, invited by the Hellenic Parliament and the Region of Attica.
